Bandits execute one abductee, threaten to kill others unless N290m ransom is paid

In a tragic development, bandits have killed one person abducted from Kuduru community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on December 28, 2023. The victim, identified as Olayinka Ogunyemi, a civil engineer, was reportedly executed by the bandits after families of the hostages failed to meet their demand for a N290 million ransom.

The abduction, which occurred on December 28, involved seven individuals, including a pregnant woman. The bandits have since threatened to kill the remaining captives if the ransom is not raised. Among those still held captive are a one and a half-year-old boy, two siblings, the pregnant woman, and two men.

A community source revealed that the bandits contacted them on Friday to inform them of Ogunyemi’s execution. Despite the payment of N23 million and the provision of food and other items demanded by the abductors, none of the hostages have been released.

Expressing fear and helplessness, the source pleaded for urgent intervention from the federal government, the police, and the army to rescue the remaining captives. The bandits have reportedly cited Nigeria’s perceived offenses against them as justification for their actions, vowing to retaliate.

The names of those still held captive are Godwin Rachel Adeoye, Godwin Dominic, Austin Buremo, Hassan Usman, Hassan Faosiya, and Bako Azeez. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for decisive action to address the escalating insecurity in the region and ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.
